JerZ Paving™ is firm believer in developing long-term relationships with our customers, but we are also aware that some projects need to go to bid. We are happy to put our proposal up against anyone however, when going to market for a bid on your paving project there are a number of basics to keep in mind. Some of these items include license, insurance, bonding, past performance and due diligence, as well as contractor responsiveness and communication. There are many more factors however, paying attention to those will get you off to a good start.

Now there’s the project itself and the price, and this is where many buyers stumble. In most cases an offer to bid goes out to 3 to 5 contractors. Some contractors take a look at the project and make recommendations based on years of experience about what should be done and submit a price.

Now that you have received the three, four, or more bids, you realize you’ve got a problem, the prices are all over the place and vary widely. For the most part they vary so much because each of the bidding contractors might take a different approach to your pavement project.

  • Is the bid for one coat of sealer or two?
  • Three coats in drive lanes?
  • Are any pavement repairs included?
  • Is the overlay 1-1/2 inches or 2 inches?
  • Is that compacted or uncompacted?

How do you compare those bids in order to make an educated decision? It’s very difficult because you’re comparing apples to oranges … and while you certainly can make a choice, it’s usually not a choice based on services and product but rather on price. It is important to compare apples to apples (or oranges to oranges) and the solution to your paving project needs to be the same from bid to bid, and only then can you evaluate the cost fairly.

On the other hand if you have a valuable relationship with your contractor, a partner who will stand behind the work and has a vested interest in helping you get the most out of your paving project while keeping a tight budget, then the price becomes a factor but not the factor in awarding the project.

JerZ Paving™ never cuts corners on engineering, materials or labor. We take pride in our work and we are one of the most reliable pavement contractors in New Jersey. Our performance will speak for itself. Contact us for a free estimate.
